Electromagnetic Testing: Eddyfi Technologies’ Probes Leading the Way

The NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, with electromagnetic testing emerging as a vital tool in the detection of material flaws and ensuring structural integrity. Like phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), electromagnetic testing (ET) has seen significant advancements, primarily driven by improvements in both hardware and software. However, the true game-changer in ET lies in the quality of the probes. The probe quality can make or break the inspection process. A top-tier probe can enhance the capabilities of any ET system, ensuring superior data quality and inspection outcomes. Let's take a closer look.

Faster Weld Inspection with Multi-group TFM

Butt weld inspection with an ultrasonic technique involves investigating the total weld volume plus the heat affected zone region on each side of the weld. This implies that inspection on both sides of the weld is required when accessible. Weld inspection using the Total Focusing Method (TFM) also requires assessment of both sides. A system with multi-group TFM capabilities is thus required if one wishes to perform the weld inspection from both sides simultaneously. This article focuses on exactly that.

Heavy Metal: Rock-Solid Inspection of Giant Rotors

As the demand for energy continues to grow, the power generation industry is pushing the boundaries of technology, leading to the development of larger and more complex rotor shafts. This new generation of nuclear power plants with such heavy components is already being deployed globally. Their implementation requires new inspection tools to help guarantee public safety and ensure the quality of these critical parts. New generation nuclear power plants typically require considerably larger forged components than previous plant designs. Manufacturing these components is a critical issue for new nuclear power plant construction since only a handful of forges worldwide have adequate capabilities to handle this type of production, and their throughput is limited. After the forging process, reliable inspection tools are required to guarantee public safety and to ensure the quality of these critical parts. In response to this non-destructive evaluation (NDE) inspection challenge, Eddyfi Technologies has introduced the innovative concept of a semi-flexible 2D array probe to overcome the limitations of conventional ultrasonic testing (UT) techniques. The performance of this probe type has been successfully validated through trials on various representative test specimens. In addition, our industry-proven UltraVision® Classic software is equipped with dedicated software features, including distance/gain/size (DGS) Curve simulation and Equivalent Reflector Size (ERS) evaluation tools, which simplify the process for heavy forging manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with applicable codes.
