Department Overview
Applied Technology Services (ATS) is an internal service provider performing technical services for PG&E. The Nondestructive Examination (NDE) unit provides technical NDE expertise, consultation, special project inspections and examinations in both the laboratory and in the field. The methods and tools used to support various projects throughout PG&E include: X-Ray conventional and computed radiography, conventional and automated ultrasonic testing using straight beam, shear wave, phased array and TOFD, magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, remote video inspection using push cameras and crawlers, CWI visual inspections, surface laser scanning, infrared thermography, field chemistry analysis, acid etching, and other various material property verification techniques.
Projects are performed in support of Gas Operations, Hydro Generation, Nuclear Power Generation and Electric Operations along with the internal ATS innovation team. Specific Gas Operation projects include gas pipeline inspections in support of internal/external corrosion direct assessment, in-line (ILI) inspection programs, MAOP reconfirmation and verification of material properties. Hydro Generation projects include pressure boundary, penstock, and turbine inspections. Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant requires ATS support for the main turbine, feed-water piping and conduit inspections on an annual basis. Electric operations projects include conductor and breaker inspections. ATS Innovation team projects include testing of new NDE instruments and equipment to provide a more quantitative or qualitative assessment of electrical components while ensuring a higher level of operational safety from current practices.
Position Summary
The NDE Expert Specialist/ Engineer shall have the skills and expertise to provide consulting and support services of various levels of complexity for all PG&E lines of business. The NDE Expert shall be knowledgeable and experienced in advanced ultrasonic testing that includes: Shear Wave, Phased Array (PAUT), Total Focusing Method (TFM), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and Guided Wave. The NDE Expert shall lead and manage complex NDE inspection programs and/or projects. The NDE Expert will also support the development and implementation of new NDE technologies, inspection techniques and methods.
This position will require 35% of time to be spent at work sites throughout the PG&E service territory with occasional overnight stays near the work site.

Responsibilities
Assume role of subject matter expert in advanced Ultrasonic Testing (UT) with specialty in PAUT, TFM, TOFD and Guided Wave.
Support Responsible Level III in maintaining the ATS NDE certification program. This includes organizing and documenting NDE certification data, generating exams, giving required training, and administering general, specific and practical exams.
Coach and mentor existing NDE personnel in advanced ultrasonic testing
Work with internal clients to develop and implement new NDE technology, inspection techniques, or methodologies to allow the condition and continued functional performance capabilities of equipment and assets to be examined.
Provide NDE consulting services to internal and external clients.
Participate in vendor/ client meetings, seminars or conferences.
Manage and coordinate complex NDE related projects.
Prepare presentations, reports and proposals for field projects, development work or potential new business
Maintain and develop ATS NDE procedures and techniques.
Direct or oversee the work of other internal or external NDE personnel
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum: $136,000
Bay Area Maximum: $232,000
Travel requirement: Up to 35% throughout the PG&E territory.
Qualifications
Minimum:
Associates degree, non-engineering Bachelors degree, technical trade/military school or equivalent experience
7 years of related experience
Desired:
Bachelor of Science degree. or equivalent including courses/training meeting ASNT, ACCP or PCN hours for certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) as a UT Level III
Minimum of 7 years experience working as a certified Level III NDE Expert developing and implementing NDE technologies
Knowledge of applicable engineering principles, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the industry and PG&E
Expert level in performing field inspections and theory for Shear Wave, PAUT, TFM, TOFD and Guided Wave
Experience in writing NDE specific procedures and producing NDE exams for Level I, II and III NDE personnel.
MT or PT Level II or Level III certifications
Experience with Eddy Current SCC inspections
Experience in pipeline girth weld inspections
Minimum of 10 years experience working as a certified Level III, with a minimum of 5 years' experience of working on licensed nuclear facilities.
Experience in maintaining an NDE certification program of Level I, II and III
Ability to influence decisions impacting safety of PG&E assets by providing expertise to engineers, managers, and directors.
Current AWS CWI and API 510, 570, 653 certifications
Knowledge and familiarity with the use of codes and standards to include ASME Section III, V, VIII, XI, 31.1, 31.3, 31.8, API 1104, API 5L, AWS D1.1
Ability to interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, specifications, standards, and company procedures
Skilled with Microsoft Office, Adobe and other editing software applications to compile final inspection reports, white papers and presentations.
Skilled in using latest NDE inspection software's (i.e. OmniPC, ProScan, UltraVision, Magnifi R, GageView, BeamTool)
