transverse flaws such as lack of fusion and cracking in rail can only be located at teh top and bottom surfaces with a 45 degree wedge, and somewhat with a 70 degree. To be able to detect transverse flaws at other locations a 45 degtree tandem probe technique does well.Set pitch-catch signal to middle of crt screen.Fusion flaws in the rail head are best detected by using a pitch catch mode using two 45 degree wedges on opposite sides of the railhead.
