Cleotis,
A new technology has greatly reduced the challenges associated with ultrasonic bolt gages (weak signals, peak jumping, non-linear distortion due to multipath mixing, hard to use, long training times,... etc.). Even NASA used this technology on its Space Station bolts because the bolts were small and had weak echoes.
You do have to have elongation measurements anymore. You can calibrate for tension directly.

UT of Long Bolts
Does anyone know where to locate a standard or specification for ultrasonic evaluation of long bolts (in the order od 125" x 2"). The bolts to be tested are turbine rotor bolts that fasten the compressor section wheels together. Thanks
