CDI is currently recruiting for the following:
Civil Inspectors - Coating, lowering-in, General
Location: Ontario, Quebec, Alberta (Various new Pipeline Projects)
Duration: Contract

Reporting to the Construction Manager (on a project basis), the Civil Inspector will be responsible for monitoring the following aspects of the construction activities at site in regards to earthworks, underground systems, foundations, erection of structural steel, concrete testing and soil testing:
· Reviews all controlling construction documents, construction specifications, drawings, Building Code and provincial regulations;
· Issues Excavating Permits, check appropriate drawings for obstructions (i.e., existing pipe or electrical lines) and ensure excavations are sloped/sheet piled properly for worker safety;
· Reviews and enforce all safety requirements including blasting;
· Oversees overall project quality in regards to civil construction;
· Monitors piling activities and assures proper quality, size, spacing and piling logs are maintained by the contractor;
· Ensure earthwork materials and compaction conforms with construction drawings and specifications;
· Ensure all structural steel and building set-up is as specified in the construction drawings;
· Monitor the time schedule and percentage of completion of civil work;
· Monitor third-party inspections for concrete and compaction tests;
· Ensures third-party legal survey is in place to verify survey data for the construction contractor (volumes, as builds, grades, critical anchor bolts);
· Monitor Contractors civil red mark drawings for completeness and accuracy;
· Monitor the Contractors safety and environmental conformance;
· Witness all concrete pours to ensure anchor bolts, embedments, rebar and forms conform to dimensions and location;
· Witness set-up of all buildings and structural steel, ensure the overhead crane meets requirements, and witness load test;
· Witness grading of final site contours;
· Witness layout of piles, ensuring locations are as required and use third-party inspections as required for piling;
· Monitor painting in progress, ensuring minimum coverage is obtained;
· Conduct Pipe/utility locating with Company Operations;
· Work with the Company Safety and Environment Inspector to ensure all Company, Federal and Provincial safety, environmental and health regulations are followed and complied with (due diligence);
· Complete and submit daily reports, including manpower and equipment onsite working on inspected activities;
· Attend safety, operations, construction, Prime Construction Contractor and progress meetings as required;
· Ensure Contractor obtains permits for water takes/releases and septic modifications;
· Ensure appropriate ramping is used when contractor crosses over existing facilities;
· Ensure sewage system (septic tank, disposal field) are inspected and approved by local Health Inspector before it is backfilled;
· Verify Construction Contractor lift plans prior to heavy load lifts;
· Monitors contractor supplied rebar and structural steel materials as they arrive on site to ensure they meet Company specifications;
· Ensures the installation of form work, anchor bolts and embedments for concrete foundations conform to specifications;
· Provides continuous safety watch inspection during underground locates with hydro-vac or hand excavation;
· Provides continuous safety watch inspection during all excavations when required by Company Operating Procedures;
· Sets up locations to place contaminated soil from excavations;
· If structural welding, cutting and other hot work is required, ensures proper hot work permits are obtained from Company operations;
· Keeps daily and weekly records of construction activities and keeps the Construction Manager informed of the same;
· Offers practical advise on the possible resolution for items of concern that may arise during the construction and equipment installation phases of the project;
· Works closely with the Contractor to ensure the civil portion of the project remains as per the as planned schedule;
· Issues safe work permits for civil works.
Minimum Qualifications and Work Experience:
· Carries a degree/diploma as a civil engineer, technician or technologist;
· Has 5 to 10 years related experience in field inspection and construction;
· Possesses a background in the oil, gas and/or petrochemical industries;
· Possess a working knowledge of the latest editions of CSA A23.1, A23.2, S16.1, NBC and CSSBI;
· Has related experience in excavation methods in close proximity to buried, active, loaded mechanical and electrical systems;
· A strong background in modern survey techniques an asset;
· Possesses a working knowledge of the latest provincial environmental codes;
· Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication (oral, written, listening) skills;
· A strong team player with the ability to work independently when required;
· Possesses a strong background in loss prevention programs;
· Has taken a recent hazardous materials (WHIMIS) course (within previous 2 years);
· Has taken recent construction related first aid courses (within previous 2 years);
· Has attended and passed a defensive driving course (within previous 2 years);
· A strong background in Company civil design and construction execution (i.e. TOPS) an asset.
